Steve Jobs passes away – 1955 – 2011

October 6th, 2011

The rumours are true. The IT world has lost a true visionary.

Steve Jobs has passed away after 35 years of innovating everything he touched. Despite not having owned a lot of Apple products I appreciate the things this man created.

Girl quits job by emailing pics to everyone in the office

August 10th, 2010

Be careful when trying to improve productivity in your office. Spying on employees does not lead to productivity, it leads to negativity and animosity.

Jenny wasn’t prepared to quit over it, but it pushed her to a point where all it took was one small comment.

And when she did quit, she quit with a bang. The kind of bang that makes here a GregPike.ca Hero.

Here’s Jenny’s photographic story:

Editors Note: theCHIVE has come out and pointed out that this is a hoax.

The Uniform Project – One dress, different accessories for every day of the year

May 12th, 2010

The Uniform Project was started as a means to raise money for less fortunate children through the Akanksas Foundation.

What she has done is inspiring both from a fashion perspective and from a humanitarian perspective.

At the end of Year 1 she raised $80,607, enough to keep 223 children in schools with uniforms and school supplies.

I wish I had discovered this early such that I could have promoted it and encouraged my readers to contribute.

60 years ago this man threw around a pie plate that has since become an important part of our lives.

Today he has passed away.

Without Fred Ultimate (Frisbee) would not exist, a sport that has been a huge part of my life for the past eight years.

Thank you Fred.

Incredible Tauntaun Halloween Costume

November 30th, 2009

I try and avoid being too liberal with presenting people as GregPike.ca Heroes, but this guy just struck all the right chords for me.

Tauntaun Halloween Costume (Star Wars)

The costume is a Rebel scout from the planet Hoth riding a tauntaun. It’s pretty flawless.

What’s more incredible is the process that was used to create this costume.

The world’s only wooden skyscraper in Russia

August 21st, 2009

In Arkhangelsk, Russia, a man known as Nikolai Sutyagin has built a homemade skyscraper out of his house.

Wooden Skyscraper in Russia

During Perestroyka he inherited some money and with that he started to build his dream home. He hired an architect who planned the first two floors.

From there he spent the next fifteen years building his house upwards. Right now it soars high over the city with thirteen floors. It is the taller structure in the city looking down on even the tallest cement buildings.

Some people in the city love it; others are afraid for their homes and for their skyline.

Either way, this is one interestingly ambitious project.

Canadian Dave Carroll Sticks it to United Airlines – Sings “United Breaks Guitars”

July 13th, 2009

Dave Carroll has stepped into the ranks of a very special collection of people who are GregPike.ca Heroes.

In the spring of 2008 he was traveling via United Airlines and his guitar was broke in transit. After a year of bickering with United’s customer service representatives (and getting no where) he decided to write a catchy tune describing his misfortune with the world.

After producing the video and becoming famous for it, United finally offered to pay for his guitar (and get rid of all the bad publicity swelling around this video), but it was too late. He wasn’t interested in being bought. Taylor Guitars on the other hand sent Dave some free merchandise and posted online about how to take care of you guitar while you travel.

Now Dave is working on a followup song about United. This should be good.
