Go Andrew Skinner!

September 30th, 2009

A friend of mine, Andrew Skinner, has entered a local radio competition through K-Rock.

He is currently competing against for a total $15,000, although as of today $2,500 has been awarded.

Monday each contested was challenge to remove all of their friends from Facebook and add as many as they could by the end of the day, the person with the most being award $500. Andrew won by almost twice as many friends!

Yesterday was the election challenge where each contestant had to find as many politicians as they could and ask them what their stance was on the Mike and Bill Almighty 2 challenge and what their favorite classic rock album is. The person with the most candidate responses won. Andrew’s competitor Monica won $500.

Mike and Bill Almighty 2 tattoo challengeToday they took the challenge to a new level. The first person back to the station with a tattoo of the image shown would win $1500. Both contestants aggressively sought the prize, Monica arrived back at the station first.

Unfortunately that leaves Andrew with a tattoo and no extra cash for it. I certainly hope the station compensates him for this in some way.

WD-40 and its incredible uses

September 29th, 2009

WD-40 SprayEveryone knows you can use WD-40 for lubricating. Not many know about some of it’s other wacky functions.

  • Protects silver from tarnishing.
  • Removes road tar and grime from cars.
  • Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
  • Gives floors that ‘just-waxed’ sheen without making them slippery.
  • Keeps flies off cows.
  • Restores and cleans chalkboards.
  • Removes lipstick stains.
  • Loosens stubborn zippers.
  • Untangles jewelry chains.
  • Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
  • Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
  • Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.
  • Removes tomato stains from clothing.
  • Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
  • Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
  • Keeps scissors working smoothly.
  • Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.
  • It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn’t seem to harm the finish and you won’t have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember t o open some windows if you have a lot of marks.
  • Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!
  • Gives a children’s playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.
  • Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.
  • Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
  • Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.
  • Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
  • Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.
  • Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.
  • Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.
  • Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.
  • Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.
  • Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
  • Removes splattered grease on stove .
  • Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
  • Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
  • Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).
  • Removes all traces of duct tape.
  • Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.
  • Florida’s favourite use is: ‘cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.’
  • The favourite use in the state of New York, WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.
  • WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it’s a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.
  • Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.
  • WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag. 42. Also, if you’ve discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!
  • If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.
  • Removes pricing labels adhesive, and tape adhesives.

Ron Ellsworth appears in Lancer Unleashed video series

September 23rd, 2009

Ron Ellsworth CryingSt. John’s mayoral candidate Ron Ellsworth has taken an innovative approach to reaching young voters by giving a cameo appearance in Episode 3 of the popular Lancer Unleashed video series.

Lancer Unleashed is a local online series, produced by Upstream, a St. John’s based marketing firm. The videos follow the adventures of Bruce Payne and the Rookie, two car wranglers that meet their match when they come up against the Mitsubishi Lancer.

“Young people today are becoming more difficult to reach with traditional media – Ron’s entertaining performance in Video 3 is his way of going ‘outside-the-box’ to get his campaign message to NL’s youth,” says Joe Coffey, Account Director at Upstream Marketing. “Ron is also slated to appear in Video 4 of the Lancer Unleashed series.”

Marriage Proposal – Ring on Helium Balloon

September 18th, 2009

I have deduced that this video is a fake. A viral ad for The Man Registry.

Firstly, the timing for this video is too perfect. She arrives just as he finishes describing what he is going to do. Then he drops to his knee the minute the camera has a view of them.

Second, the camera man obviously knows she is about to release the balloon. Despite his shaky hand the camera follows the balloon immediately as it is released.

Finally, if you view the video on YouTube you’ll notice advertisements in the video and on the side for The Man Registry.

The Boy Who Wanted Too Much

September 11th, 2009

MissyToday my family brought our 10 year old cat, Missy, to the vet. We had the impression she was in pain and recently she started to pee in various places around the house.

As soon as a veterinarian saw her he told dad there was something wrong and he would tell she had a tumor before he even opened her up, it was that big. It’s sad, but she died on the operating table.

In high school when she was young I thought to myself that she was that perfect size where she’s old enough to cuddle (and not a ball of energy) but small enough that she was still a cute kitten. The following poem struck me.

I post this in memory of Missy.

The Boy Who Wanted Too Much

He begged
and he pled
and he did things as such
To get a new kitty
The Boy Who Wanted Too Much

After owning a cat
for almost two and a half months
the boy thought to himself:

“I like my kitty
he is perfect in size
I wish him no bigger
else him I’ll despise”

And just like that
with the blink of an eye
appeared his fairy godmother
with some loose ends to tie

“It’s a wish that you want
and a wish you shall get
What I do for you now
please do not forget.”

“I’ll remember what you do
Fairy Godmother dear.
I think you already
for coming to hear.”

“Oh do not thank me
Thank the heavens above
It is they who have sent me
to comfort and love…

But let’s get back to business!
And back to your cries.
You wish on your cat
to not change in size”

Ali-zee, Ali-zoo
And an Ala-kazeer
With the flick of her wrist
She had gone, disappeared.

The boy looked around once
Noticed something was strange
He thought about moving
but his posture would not change.

“God damn that old hag!”
said the boy with a tut.
“She has frozen all time
I cannot get up!”

The boy wanted to cry
but a tear would not form
“Now that time is all stopped
I wish I hadn’t been born.”

But this time, the fairy godmother,
she did not reply.
But the cat wasn’t growing
so she did not lie.

Send large files over the web? Better use a carrier pigeon

September 10th, 2009

A South African company, The Unlimited, has taken upon itself to prove a point: that using a carrier pigeon to send digital data is faster than using the local big-time telecom company’s internet service.

Carrier pigeon faster than internetThe Unlimited attempted this experiment by strapping memory cards to pigeons and sending them to coastal village while at the same time submitting the same data online.

After just over two hours of waiting the data from the pigeons was received in full wereas only four percent of the data had been transfered over the internet.

Others have tried similar experiments and have come to similar conclusions.

Sending data via carrier pigeon has become known as IPoAC (IP over Avian Carrier).
